Getting to Know Doug
When I noticed my first gray hair I knew it was time for a professional change. I wanted something more fulfilling and something that got me outside instead of sitting behind a desk all day. I thought Go Ape would be a seasonal pivot to shake things up, but I have been hooked ever since. I have gotten to work with amazing people who have kept me hooked, and I have no regrets about taking that first leap.
How people-focused it is. I spend most of my time listening to people and their needs, then turning that into an experience I know they will value. When guests show up ready and eager, that is the result of real work happening behind the scenes.
Your Go Ape Story
Too many to count, but here is one from just a few weeks back. I read a follow up email from a middle school teacher I have been working with who had been struggling with cliques in her classroom. It had turned into a real us versus them dynamic. We brought the entire class out for a team building experience and it completely shifted the atmosphere. One shared experience changed the tone of the whole start of the year.
It is humbling to know I played a part in that. I hear stories like this all the time, and they never stop meaning something to me.
I have done the Tarzan Swing on Site 5 at our Lums Pond location easily a thousand times and I still pause every single time before stepping off the platform.
I had a guest literally hug me after finishing the course. Well, it was more of a tackle that became a hug. I still think about it and cannot help but laugh.
The Personal Side
Anything that I get to do with someone I care about. It does not have to be epic. A ten minute conversation with an old friend to catch up can be better and more meaningful than scaling Everest.
I would be lying if I said I have never blasted “Sabotage” by the Beastie Boys in the parking lot. Honestly, that should be my theme song. Please play it every time I enter the room.
Keanu Reeves. Because it is Keanu Reeves.
Go Ape Philosophy
Go Ape gives people a chance to surprise themselves. They leave knowing they did something they were not totally sure they could do, and that sticks with them.
You do not have to be fearless. You just have to show up.
