Thrill Over the Grill: Epic Things to Do for the 4th of July Weekend

Every year when the 4th of July rolls around, we find ourselves asking the same question: What should we do that’s actually memorable? Don’t get me wrong, we love a good fireworks show and backyard BBQ, but a few years ago, we decided to mix it up… and now we have a new family tradition that’s stuck: spending the day outside, completely off the grid, and doing something adventurous before the evening festivities begin.

So if you’re looking for family-friendly 4th of July ideas, especially ones that get everyone off their screens and into the fresh air, here’s what worked for us:

Morning: Get Outside & Get Moving

Last year, we kicked off the day at Go Ape, an outdoor adventure course with rope bridges, zip lines, and tree-climbing challenges. It might sound intense, but they have different levels that vary in difficulty. Even our younger child (age 7 at the time) had a blast on their “Journey” course, which is perfect for first-timers.

What did I love most?

  • Everyone was moving, laughing, and helping each other
  • No one was on their phones (except to snap a few awesome pictures)
  • It felt like we really did something before the day even began

It was a refreshing break from the usual rush to prep food and secure spots at the park by noon.

Afternoon: Picnic + Chill Time

After our morning in the trees, we packed a simple picnic and stayed at the park (all Go Ape courses are found in local parks!). Here’s what we brought (easy and 100% kid-approved):

  • DIY sandwich wraps with turkey, cheese, and hummus
  • Watermelon slices and blueberries (on our red, white, and blue theme!)
  • Sparkling lemonade
  • A couple of fold-out chairs and a big blanket

The kids tossed a frisbee and ran around while we relaxed under the trees. Honestly, it felt like summer should feel: no stress, just sun, food, and family time.

Evening: Fireworks (But Make It Low-Key)

We don’t always go to the biggest fireworks show in town. Last year, we watched from a school parking lot on a hill near our neighborhood. It was quieter, less crowded, and honestly just as magical. We brought glow sticks and popsicles and called it a day. This year, we’re also looking at local drone and laser shows for a more low-key option.

Why We’ll Do It Again

Mixing some active outdoor time with relaxed family traditions gave us the best of both worlds. Go Ape turned out to be such a highlight. The kids are already asking to go back this year, and I loved how connected and present we all felt.

If you’re thinking about new ways to spend your 4th of July weekend (especially if you’ve got a crew that likes movement and a bit of adventure), I’d definitely recommend adding something like Go Ape to your plans.

Bonus: You can still be home in time to grill and catch the fireworks!
